Permian Basin held steady with 346 active drilling rigs for the third straight week as of Oct. 28, according to Baker Hughes’ weekly count, while Texas posted the biggest decline among major producing states (down 3 rigs in past week to 368). Also, there were 106 rigs in New Mexico (up 1 in past week) and 768 in U.S. (down 3 from a 2022 high of 771 rigs). Texas and Permian counts are 5 below 2022 highs.
Oklahoma is No. 3 among states with 66 rigs (up 1) followed by Louisiana with 60 (down 2) and North Dakota with 36 (down 2). Eagle Ford (down 1) and Haynesville (unchanged) have 70 rigs each, Marcellus has 41, and Williston has 39 to rank among the top five regions.
Lea County, N.M., remains Permian’s decisive leader with 67 rigs (up 1) followed by Eddy, N.M., with 36 (unchanged), Martin (unchanged) and Reeves (up 1) with 35 each, Midland with 31 (unchanged) and Loving with 24 (up 1).
