Permian, Texas add drilling rigs, Lea County now leads Permian Basin

Permian Basin and Texas each added drilling rigs for the second time in three weeks, according to the weekly report of Aug. 23 from Baker Hughes.  There were 306 rigs in Permian Basin (303 previous week, 320 year ago) and 274 in Texas (273 previous week, 307 year ago).  Also, there were 106 rigs in New Mexico (107 previous week, 107 year ago) and 585 in U.S. (586 previous week, 632 year ago).  The Permian count is a two-month high.

Permian Basin has a new leader in rig count among counties.  Lea County, N.M., added 1 rig (52), and Eddy, N.M., declined by 2 (50).  Other leaders include Martin with 31, Reeves with 28 and Loving with 21 – all three unchanged.  Midland County added 2 rigs to reach 20 followed by Reagan with 15, Upton with 14 (up 1) and Howard with 12.

Louisiana is No. 3 among states with 39 rigs (up 1 in previous week, down 3 in previous year) followed by Oklahoma with 38 (37 week ago, 39 year ago) and North Dakota with 33 (35 week ago, 33 year ago).  Eagle Ford is No. 2 among regions with 47 (48 week ago, 52 year ago) followed by Williston with 34 (36 week ago, 33 year ago), Haynesville with 33 (32 week ago, 41 year ago) and Marcellus with 25 (25 week ago, 31 year ago)
