Lea County, N.M., added 11 rigs in the past week to return to the top of the count of active oil and gas rigs in Permian Basin. According to the weekly report of June 11 from Baker Hughes, Lea has 44 rigs. Midland added 3 rigs in the past week to move up to second with 35, and Eddy fell from the top after losing 9 rigs in the past week for a new total of 30. Other leaders include Reeves with 26 rigs, Martin with 16, Loving with 14, Howard with 13 and Upton with 12.
Texas, New Mexico, Permian Basin and U.S. each added rigs in the past week for the first time since April 1. And all four reached high counts for 2021. Baker Hughes said as of June 11 there were 236 rigs in Permian Basin (232 last week, 137 last year), 219 rigs in Texas (216 last week, 114 last year), 75 rigs in New Mexico (73 last week, 56 last year) and 461 rigs in U.S. (456 last week, 279 last year).
Haynesville remains the runner-up among regions in rig count with 49 followed by Eagle Ford with 33, Marcellus with 28, Williston with 16 and Cana Woodford with 15. Third among states is Louisiana with 52 rigs followed by Oklahoma with 28, and North Dakota and Pennsylvania with 16 each.
