August 19, 2025 by PBOG Leave a Comment

Permian Basin and Texas continued their declines in count of active drilling rigs.  Baker Hughes said as of Aug. 15 there were 255 rigs in Permian (down 1 in the past week, down 48 or 16 percent from 303 a year ago) and 242 rigs in Texas (down 1 in past week, down 31 or 11 percent from 273 a year ago).  Both Texas and Permian counts are the lowest since September 2021.

There also are 95 rigs in New Mexico (unchanged from last week, down 12 from a year ago) and 539 in U.S. (unchanged from last week, down 47 or 8 percent from 586 a year ago).

Counts in Lea (50 rigs) and Eddy (37) counties in New Mexico remain unchanged, but still lead Permian Basin.  Others include Midland (down 3 in past week) and Loving with 21 each, Reeves (down 1) with 20, Martin (down 2) with 17, Upton with 15, Reagan (up 1) with 12, and Glasscock (down 1) with 10.

Oklahoma held its runner-up position among states with 43 rigs ahead of Louisiana with 36 (up 2) and North Dakota with 29.  Among regions, Haynesville holds narrow lead for runner-up with 40 (down 1 in past week) ahead of Eagle Ford with 39 (up 1), Williston with 31 and Marcellus with 24.  Eagle Ford was only region to add at least 1 rig.
