A new report from a task force of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners said the U.S. needs additional natural gas pipeline infrastructure and storage to meet the growing demand for energy. Some officials called for the formation of a gas reliability organization like the North American Electric Reliability Corp.
Recommendations from the task force included creation of a natural gas “readiness forum,” development of additional gas pipeline infrastructure and storage, new tools to improve supplier performance in extreme weather, demand response initiatives for gas utilities, and market changes to incentivize gas pipeline capacity releases.
Todd Snitchler, president and CEO of Electric Power Supply Association, said Nov. 12, “Competitive power suppliers have invested significantly to strengthen winter readiness, but we need continued alignment between gas and electric systems.”
