Rig count in Permian Basin declined for the second straight week, according to the weekly report of March 14 from Baker Hughes. There were 301 active drilling rigs in Permian Basin – down 3 from the previous week and down 4 from the 2025 high of 305 on Feb. 28. The count was unchanged in Texas at 281 and down 3 in New Mexico to 102. A year ago, there were 294 rigs in Texas and 107 in New Mexico.
In U.S. as of March 14, there were 592 active rigs – unchanged from the previous week and down 37 from 629 a year ago.
Eagle Ford in south Texas is No. 2 among regions with 48 (down 1 in previous week, down 7 in past year) followed by Williston with 34 (up 1 in past week), Haynesville with 29 (unchanged) and Marcellus with 24 (unchanged). Oklahoma was the only major producing state to add rigs last week – up 2 to 51 rigs. Other states in top 5 are North Dakota with 32 (unchanged) and Louisiana with 29 (unchanged).
Top three counties in Permian Basin declined in rig count last week. Lea, N.M., leads with 50 (down 1) followed by Eddy, N.M., with 49 (down 2) and Martin with 28 (down 1). Others include Midland with 27 (up 1), Reeves with 26, Loving with 19, Upton with 15, Reagan with 14, Ward with 11 and Howard with 10 (those six unchanged).
