Rig counts declined in Texas and U.S. last week, according to Baker Hughes, but Permian Basin held steady with 304 active drilling rigs for the sixth straight week. As of Jan. 10 there were 282 rigs in Texas (down 3 in past week, down 26 in past year) and 584 rigs in U.S. (down 5 in past week, down 35 in past year). New Mexico also was unchanged with 103 (up 6 from 97 year ago). Permian is down 5 from 309 year ago.
Eagle Ford was down 2 in the past week to 43 (down 12 in past year) but still ranks No. 2 among regions. Others include Williston with 37 (unchanged in past week, up 3 in past year), Haynesville with 31 (unchanged in past week, down 12 in past year) and Marcellus with 23 (down 1 in past week, down 4 in past year). And among states Oklahoma is No. 3 with 43 (week ago 43, year ago 43) followed by North Dakota with 36 (week ago 36, year ago 33) and Louisiana with 30 (week ago 30, year ago 42).
In Permian Basin, rig counts remained the same from a week ago in the top 6 producing counties. Eddy (53) and Lea (47) in New Mexico are the leaders followed by Midland (30), Reeves (28), Martin (27) and Loving (21). Upton reported 13 rigs, and Reagan and Ward each has 11 rigs.
