Count of oil and gas drilling rigs in Permian Basin declined by 4 to 347 last week, according to Baker Hughes. It was the largest decline in Permian since falling by 5 to 117 rigs in August 2020. Also as of Aug. 5, there were 373 rigs in Texas (up 2 in past week), 104 in New Mexico (down 6) and 764 in U.S. (down 3). Texas was one of only 4 states with an increase, and New Mexico posted the largest decline.
Eagle Ford remains No. 2 among regions with 72 (unchanged last week) followed by Haynesville with 69 (unchanged), Williston with 39 (up 1) and Marcellus with 38 (unchanged). Oklahoma is No. 3 among states with 64 rigs (unchanged) followed by Louisiana with 62 (down 3) and North Dakota with 37 (up 1).
Lea County, N.M., leads the Permian with 55 rigs (down 3 in past week) followed by Eddy, N.M., with 46 (down 3), Midland with 39 (down 1), Loving with 29 (up 2), Reeves with 28 (unchanged), Martin with 27 (down 1), Howard with 23 (unchanged), Ward with 14, Upton with 13 and Andrews with 10.
