Rig count in Permian Basin remains unchanged at 346 for fourth week

November 10, 2022 by PBOG

Count of active drilling rigs in Permian Basin remains 346 for the fourth straight week, according to Baker Hughes, as losses offset gains.  As of Nov. 4, there were 369 rigs in Texas (up 1 in past week), 106 rigs in New Mexico (unchanged) and 770 rigs in U.S. (up 2).  U.S. count included 2022 high of 613 oil-directed rigs.

Oklahoma remains No. 3 among states with 67 rigs (up 1) followed by Louisiana with 59 (down 1) and North Dakota with 35 (up 2).  Eagle Ford in south Texas is No. 2 among regions with 70 (unchanged) followed by Haynesville with 69 (down 1), and Marcellus (unchanged) and Williston (up 2) each with 41 rigs.

Enverus said Pioneer Natural Resources continues to lead Permian drillers with 23 rigs followed by Mewbourne with 20, Occidental with 19, EOG with 18, ExxonMobil with 16 and Devon with 15.  Also, 89 operators are running rigs in Permian as of Nov. 3 compared to 65 a year ago.

Lea (down 4 to 63 rigs) and Eddy (up 4 last week to 40) counties in New Mexico continue to lead Permian Basin in active rigs.  Reeves (up 2 to 37), Martin (up 1 to 36) and Midland (down 1 to 30) complete Permian’s top 5 counties.
