Rig count increases 2 in Texas for first time since February to 273

Baker Hughes’ weekly report of May 9 included an increase in the count of active drilling rigs in Texas for the first time since February.  There were 273 rigs in Texas compared to 271 the previous week and 289 a year ago.  Also as of May 9, there were 285 rigs in Permian Basin (down from 287 previous week and 314 year ago), 96 in New Mexico (100 previous week, 109 year ago) and 578 in U.S. (584 previous week, 603 year ago).

Leading Permian Basin counties Eddy (down 1 to 50) and Lea (down 3 to 43) in New Mexico both declined.  Other leaders were Reeves with 28 (unchanged), Martin with 27 (up 2), Midland with 23 (unchanged) and Loving with 21 (unchanged).  Also, there were 16 in Upton, 11 in Reagan (up 3) and 10 in Ward.

Eagle Ford rig count was steady in south Texas at 46 followed by Williston and Haynesville with 33 each and Marcellus with 25.  Third among states was Oklahoma with 55 (unchanged) followed by North Dakota with 32 (unchanged) and Louisiana with 30 (down 3).
