Reeves in Texas and Lea in New Mexico, the leading counties in Permian Basin, each lost 1 rig in the previous week for new totals of 56 as of Aug. 23, according to the latest count of oil and gas drilling rigs by Baker Hughes. And Midland in Texas and Eddy in New Mexico also each lost 1 rig for new totals of 48. Other basin leaders include Martin with 37 rigs (up 2 in past week), Loving with 34 rigs (up 1), Howard with 26 (unchanged) and Ward with 23 (up 1).
Across the U.S., the decline in the past week reached double figures as the rig count fell by 19 rigs to 916 from 935 (1,044 a year ago). As of Aug. 23, Texas led with 446 rigs (450 a week ago, 528 a year ago) followed by New Mexico with 109 (111 a week ago, 103 a year ago), Oklahoma with 82 (85 a week ago, 140 a year ago), Louisiana with 61 (62 a week ago, 54 a year ago) and North Dakota with 48 rigs (48 a week ago, 52 a year ago).
Permian Basin in the past week fell from 441 rigs to 434 (485 a year ago) followed by Eagle Ford with 67 rigs (67 last week, 79 last year), Marcellus with 53 rigs (56 a week ago, 52 a year ago), Haynesville with 50 (50 a week ago, 49 a year ago) and Williston with 48 rigs (48 a week ago, 52 a year ago).
