Permian Basin, Texas and U.S. continued to add drilling rigs, according to the weekly report of July 2 by Baker Hughes. U.S. added rigs for the third straight week to move to 580 rigs from 562 in the June 12 report. U.S. is up 7 in the past week from 573 and 41 in the past year from 539 (7.61 percent).
Also as of July 2, Permian Basin reported 261 rigs (up 3 in the past week, down 4 in the past year), Texas had 271 rigs (up 3 in the past week, up 15 in the past year), and New Mexico had 98 rigs (up 1 in the past week, up 8 in the past year). U.S. is up 35 rigs from the beginning of 2026 (oil-directed rigs up to 445 from 409 to start the year).
The rig counts of 48 in Oklahoma and 34 in Louisiana also are up for the past week and year, but North Dakota (24) is down 2 last week to 24 and down 5 in the past year. There was little new activity among regions. Haynesville (55 rigs) and Eagle Ford in south Texas (44) both were unchanged in the past week, Williston was down 1 to 27, and Marcellus was unchanged at 24 rigs.
