September 5, 2023 by PBOG

Baker Hughes said Friday the U.S. count of active drilling rigs fell for the eighth straight week, and rig counts also declined in Permian Basin and Texas.  As of Sept. 1 there were 631 rigs in U.S. (632 week ago, 760 year ago), 319 in Permian Basin (320 week ago, 342 year ago), 306 in Texas (307 week ago, 362 year ago) and 107 in New Mexico (107 week ago, 108 year ago).  Colorado was the only major producing state to add at least one rig last week (up 1 to 15).

Louisiana remains No. 3 among states in rig count as of Sept. 1 with 42 (42 week ago, 65 year ago) followed by Oklahoma with 39 (39 week ago, 65 year ago) and North Dakota with 33 (33 week ago, 39 year ago).  Eagle Ford in south Texas remains No. 2 among basins with 50 rigs (52 week ago, 71 year ago) followed by Haynesville in east Texas and Louisiana with 41 (41 week ago, 71 year ago), Williston with 33 (33 week ago, 41 year ago) and Marcellus with 30 (31 week ago, 35 year ago).

Counts in Permian’s top three counties were unchanged.  Lea, N.M., leads with 63 followed by Eddy, N.M., with 42 and Martin with 37.  Other leaders include Midland with 28 (down 1 in past week), Loving with 27 (up 2), Reeves with 25 (down 2), Ward with 17 (unchanged), Glasscock with 12 (unchanged) and Reagan with 11 (unchanged).
