In its final weekly report of 2025, Baker Hughes said Permian Basin, Texas, New Mexico and U.S. each was down in its count of active drilling rigs for the year. As of Dec. 30, there were 247 rigs in Permian Basin (down 18.75 percent from 304 to start the year), 231 in Texas (down 18.66 percent from 284 to start the year) and 101 in New Mexico (down 2 rigs from 103 to start the year). The U.S. count of 546 was down 7.30 percent from 589 to start 2025.
The count of oil-directed rigs in U.S. for the year was down 14.70 percent from 483 rigs to the current 412. The count of gas-directed rigs was up 22 rigs or 21.36 percent from 103 to start the year.
Among regions at yearend, Haynesville reported 42 rigs (up 11 from 31 for the year) followed by Eagle Ford in south Texas with 40 rigs (down 5 from 45 for the year), Williston with 29 rigs (down 8 from 37 for the year) and Marcellus with 24 (unchanged). And among states at yearend, Oklahoma and Louisiana have 43 rigs each, and North Dakota reported 27 rigs (down 9 from 36 for the year). Louisiana was up 13 rigs for the year from 30, and Oklahoma was unchanged.
