Rig counts in Texas and the Permian Basin continue to decline in 2026. Baker Hughes said in its weekly report of Jan. 30 there were 242 rigs in Permian Basin (down 2 in past week, down 61 or 20.13 percent in past year from 303) and 226 rigs in Texas (down 3 in past week, down 51 or 18.41 percent in past year from 277). Permian started 2026 with 247 rigs, and Texas started with 232.
Across the U.S., there were 546 rigs (up 2 in past week, down 36 or 6.19 percent in past year) and 102 rigs in New Mexico (unchanged in past week, down 4 in past year).
Oklahoma is third among states with 46 rigs (up 3 in past week) followed by Louisiana with 38 (up 1) and North Dakota (up 1). Haynesville is second among regions with 32 rigs (up 1 in past week) followed by Eagle Ford with 40 (unchanged), Williston with 29 (up 1) and Marcellus with 25 (up 1).
