Counts of drilling rigs in Permian Basin and Texas increased for the fourth straight week, according to the report of Aug. 21 from Baker Hughes.  Permian Basin reported 267 rigs – up 2 in past week and up 12 or 4.71 percent from 255 a year ago.  And Texas reported 281 rigs – up 4 in the past week and up 41 or 17.08 percent from 240 a year ago.  It’s the most rigs in Permian since June 2025 and in Texas since March 2025.  Texas’ gain of 4 was the largest for the week among major producing states.

The rig count in New Mexico declined by 3 to 96 in the past week, but it’s up from 95 a year ago.  And in the U.S. there are 588 rigs – down 5 in the past week but up 50 or 9.29 percent from 538 a year ago.  Counts of both oil- and gas-directed rigs in U.S. declined.

Oklahoma is third among states with 51 rigs followed by Louisiana with 35 (down 3) and North Dakota with 24.  Haynesville is runner-up among regions with 57 rigs (down 2) followed by Eagle Ford in south Texas with 50 (up 1), Williston with 27 and Marcellus with 24.
