Permian Basin, Texas and New Mexico continue to report more than twice the number of active oil and gas drilling rigs compared to a year ago. Baker Hughes said as of Sept. 24 there were 260 rigs in Permian (259 week ago, 125 year ago), 242 rigs in Texas (239 week ago, 113 year ago), 84 rigs in New Mexico (84 week ago, 41 year ago) and 521 rigs in U.S. (512 week ago, 261 year ago).
Louisiana remains No. 3 among states with 43 rigs (39 week ago, 39 year ago) followed by Oklahoma with 39 (35 week ago, 12 year ago) and North Dakota with 22 (22 week ago, 9 year ago). Haynesville remains No. 2 among regions with 47 rigs (47 week ago, 36 year ago) followed by Eagle Ford with 37 (36 week ago, 12 year ago), Marcellus with 26 (27 week ago, 26 year ago) and Williston with 23 (23 week ago, 10 year ago).
Lea County, N.M., with 52 rigs leads Permian Basin followed by Eddy County, N.M., with 30, Midland (down 2 in past week) and Martin with 26 each, Reeves with 23 (up 2 in past week), Howard with 17, Loving with 15 and Upton with 14.
