Texas added a drilling rig to start the new year while rig counts for Permian Basin, New Mexico and U.S. remain unchanged last week. In Baker Hughes’ weekly report of Jan. 3, Texas added 1 rig last week to reach 285 (down 23 or 7 percent from 308 a year ago). Also, there were 304 rigs in Permian Basin (down 7 rigs or 2 percent from 311 a year ago), 103 in New Mexico (up 6 rigs or 6 percent from 97 a year ago) and 589 in U.S. (down 32 or 5 percent from 621 a year ago).
Eddy County, N.M., dropped a rig down to 53, but still leads the Permian Basin. Other leaders include Lea, N.M., (up 1 to 47), Midland (30), Reeves (28), Martin (27) and Loving (21). Also, Upton reports 13 rigs and Reagan 11.
Oklahoma is third among states with 43 rigs followed by North Dakota with 36 and Louisiana with 30 (down 1 in past week). Eagle Ford in south Texas is runner-up among regions with 45 rigs followed by Williston with 37, Haynesville with 31 and Marcellus with 24.
Texas was the only state to report an additional rig in the past week.
