Counts of active drilling rigs in Permian Basin, Texas and U.S. continue to rebound, according to the weekly report of May 22 by Baker Hughes. Texas added 10 rigs – its most new rigs in one week in four years – to reach 255. It was the fifth straight week for Texas to add rigs (from 232 to 255), and the count of 255 is the highest since July 2025. Texas’ last double-digit gain was May 2022 – a year in which there were four. Texas count is down 11 or 4.14 percent since a count of 266 a year ago.
Also as of May 22, there were 250 rigs in Permian Basin (up 4 in past week, down 29 or 10.39 percent in past year), 93 in New Mexico (down 3 in past week, up 1 in past year) and 558 in U.S. (up 7 in past week, down 8 or 1.41 percent in past year). It was also the fifth straight week for gains in the U.S. count (from 543 rigs to 558).
Last week in U.S. there were 10 additional oil-directed rigs and 3 fewer gas-directed rigs.
Haynesville lost 1 rig to decline to 55, but remains No. 2 among regions followed by Eagle Ford with 44 (up 2), Williston with 28 (unchanged) and Marcellus with 24 (unchanged). Oklahoma is third among states with 45 (unchanged) followed by Louisiana with 39 (unchanged) and North Dakota with 26 (unchanged).
