Texas adds 2 rigs, Permian Basin remains at 303 for fourth straight week

November 26, 2024 by PBOG

Permian Basin reported 303 drilling rigs for the fourth straight week, and Texas defied the national trend by adding 2 rigs in the past week.  Baker Hughes said in its weekly report of Nov. 22 that there were 281 rigs in Texas (279 last week, 303 year ago), 102 in New Mexico (unchanged in past week, 106 year ago) and 583 in U.S. (584 week ago, 622 year ago).  Only once in the past 10 weeks and twice in the last 15 weeks has the U.S. added rigs.  There were 311 rigs in Permian Basin a year ago.

Eddy County, N.M., maintained its narrow lead in Permian Basin with 52 rigs (up 2 in past week) followed by Lea, N.M., with 47 (down 2), Midland with 30 (unchanged), Reeves with 29 (up 2) and Martin with 28 (unchanged).  Others include Loving with 21 (down 1), Reagan and Upton with 12 each, and Ward with 10.

Eagle Ford in south Texas is No. 2 among regions with 48 rigs (unchanged) followed by Williston with 35 (unchanged), Haynesville with 30 (down 2) and Marcellus with 25 (unchanged).  Among states Oklahoma is third with 44 rigs (up 1) followed by North Dakota with 34 (unchanged) and Louisiana with 30 (down 3).
