Despite a small decline of 1 rig in Permian Basin, Texas again posted the largest increase (up 6 rigs in past week) in Baker Hughes’ weekly counts of active oil and gas drilling rigs in U.S. As of Jan. 22, Baker Hughes said Texas had 175 rigs (169 previous week), New Mexico had 65 rigs (70 previous week) and U.S. had 378 rigs (373 previous week). Permian Basin declined 1 rig in the past week to 188 after starting the year with 175.
Lea County, N.M., is the Permian and national leader with 35 rigs followed in the basin by Eddy County, N.M., with 29 (down 5 in past week). Midland (unchanged), Martin (up 1) and Loving (up 1) have 19 rigs each. Howard (unchanged) has 17 rigs, and Reeves (down 1) has 13 rigs.
Haynesville in Louisiana and east Texas remains runner-up to Permian with 45 rigs (up 1 in past week) as of Jan. 22. Other regions include Marcellus with 30 rigs (unchanged), Eagle Ford in south Texas with 28 (unchanged), Williston with 11 (up 1) and Cana Woodford with 10 (unchanged). Louisiana is third among states with 47 (unchanged) followed by Pennsylvania with 18 (down 1), Oklahoma with 17 (unchanged), West Virginia with 12 (up 1) and North Dakota with 11 (up 1).
