September 2, 2025 by PBOG Leave a Comment

Texas added a drilling rig in the past week for the first time since May 9 – breaking a streak of 16 weeks of declining or flat rig counts.  Baker Hughes said as of Aug. 29, there were 241 active rigs in Texas – up 1 in the past week but down 33 or 12 percent from 274 a year ago.  The count when the streak started May 9 was 273.  Texas was the only major producing state to add at least 1 rig last week.

In its Aug. 29 report, Baker Hughes said there were 536 rigs in U.S. (down 2 in past week, down 47 or 8 percent from 583 a year ago), 255 rigs in Permian Basin (unchanged from last week, down 50 or 16 percent from 305 a year ago) and 95 rigs in New Mexico (unchanged in past week, down 10 or 9.5 percent from 105 year ago).

New Mexico counties Lea (51) and Eddy (36) reported no changes in rig count to lead Permian Basin.  Loving added 1 for 22 rigs followed by Midland with 21 and Reeves with 20.  Martin (down 2 to 17) dropped out of the top five counties in Permian.  Other counts include 15 in Upton, 12 in Reagan and 10 in Glasscock (up 2).

Oklahoma is third among states with 43 rigs followed by Louisiana with 37 (down 1) and North Dakota with 27 (down 1).  Eagle Ford in south Texas and Haynesville (down 1) in Louisiana and east Texas have 39 rigs each followed by Williston (down 1) with 29 and Marcellus with 24.
