Texas added drilling rigs for the fifth straight week, according to Baker Hughes’ weekly report of Aug. 28, while Permian Basin reported 267 rigs for the second week after four weeks of gains. Texas has 282 rigs (up 1 in past week, up 41 or 17.01 percent in past year), and Permian’s count is up 12 or 4.71 percent in past year.
U.S. count also was unchanged at 588 (up 52 or 9.70 percent in past year), and New Mexico count was down 1 to 95 (also 95 rigs a year ago). U.S. count of oil-directed rigs was down 5 in past week and down 8 from 2026 high of 455 as of Aug. 14. U.S. added 5 gas-directed rigs in past week to reach 2026 high of 132.
Among regions, Haynesville is No. 2 with 57 rigs followed by Eagle Ford with 50, Williston with 27 and Marcellus with 24 – all four unchanged. Among states, Oklahoma is No. 3 with 51 followed by Louisiana with 36 (up 1) and North Dakota with 24.
