Texas adds rigs for 8th straight week, but Permian Basin declines to 256

June 16, 2026 by PBOG

Permian Basin’s streak of five straight weeks of rising counts of active drilling rigs ended, but Texas’ streak continued for its eighth straight week.  In its weekly report of June 12, Baker Hughes said there 256 rigs in Permian (down 1 in past week, down 17 or 6.23 percent in past year) and 261 rigs in Texas (up 1 in past week, down 1 in past year).

Also as of June 12 there were 97 rigs in New Mexico (up 1 in past week, up 7 or 7.78 percent in past year) and 562 rigs in U.S. (down 1 in past week, up 7 or 1.26 percent in past year).  The U.S. decline stopped a streak of seven straight weeks of rising rig counts.

Haynesville is No. 2 among regions with 55 rigs (unchanged in past week, up 20 in past year) followed by Eagle Ford in south Texas with 44 (unchanged in past week, up 4 in past year), Williston with 28 (unchanged) and Marcellus with 24 (unchanged).  Among states, Oklahoma is third with 44 rigs (up 1 in past week) followed by Louisiana with 35 (down 3 in past week) and North Dakota with 26 (unchanged).

Canada’s count of 180 is up 42 in the past year.
