September 16, 2025 by PBOG Leave a Comment

After 15 weeks of declining or flat counts of active drilling rigs, Texas added rigs for the third straight week.  As of Sept. 12, Baker Hughes said there were 244 active rigs in Texas – up 1 in the past week but down 30 or 10.9 percent from 274 a year ago.  Texas started the year with 284 rigs.

The count in the Permian Basin was flat at 254 as of Sept. 12 (down 52 or 17 percent from 306 a year ago).  (Permian started the year with 304 rigs.)  Also, there were 94 rigs in New Mexico (up 1 in past week, down 13 in past year) and 539 in U.S. (up 2 in past week, down 51 or 8.6 percent in past year from 590 a year ago).

Eagle Ford added 3 rigs last week to reach 42 to regain No. 2 among regions.  Other leaders include Haynesville with 39, Williston with 29 and Marcellus with 24 – all three unchanged.  Among states, Oklahoma is third with 42 (down 1 in past week) followed by Louisiana with 37 and North Dakota with 27 – both unchanged.
