Texas adds to rig count, but Permian and New Mexico unchanged

November 4, 2021 by PBOG

Texas and U.S. added drilling rigs last week while Permian Basin and New Mexico were unchanged.  Baker Hughes said as of Oct. 29 there were 268 rigs in Permian Basin (up 126 in past year), 250 in Texas (up 1 in past week, up 117 in past year), 87 in New Mexico (up 40 in past year) and 544 in U.S. (up 2 in past week, up 248 in past year).  Texas was one of only three states to add rigs last week.

Haynesville remains No. 2 among regions with 46 rigs (unchanged in past week) followed by Eagle Ford with 40 (unchanged), Marcellus with 27 and Williston with 24.  Louisiana remains No. 3 among states with 47 rigs (down 1 in past week) followed by Oklahoma with 43 (unchanged) and North Dakota with 23.

Lea County, N.M., idled 1 rig last week for a basin-leading new total of 56.  Other Permian leaders include Eddy, N.M., with 28 (up 1), Midland with 25 (up 2), and Martin (up 2) and Reeves (unchanged) with 23 each.

U.S. Energy Information Administration said last week oil production fell by 185,000 b/d in August to 11.14 million b/d from 11.33 million b/d in June.  EIA said there were modest increases in Texas, New Mexico and North Dakota.
