Counts of active drilling rigs in Texas and U.S. both increased in the past week, according to the weekly report of April 24 by Baker Hughes. There were 234 rigs in Texas (up 2 in previous week, down 40 or 14.6 percent from 274 a year ago) and 544 rigs in U.S. (up 1 in previous week, down 43 or 7.33 percent from 587 a year ago). Texas’ gain of 2 was the most for any major producing state.
Also as of April 24, there were 242 rigs in Permian Basin (unchanged from previous week, down 47 or 16.26 percent from 289 a year ago) and 98 in New Mexico (down 2 in past week, down 2 in previous year). It’s the first count under 100 for New Mexico since October 2025.
Haynesville is No. 2 among regions with 56 rigs (up 1 in previous week) ahead of Eagle Ford in south Texas with 42 (unchanged). Williston reported 28 rigs, and Marcellus had 25 (both unchanged). Third among states was Oklahoma with 43 (up 1) followed by Louisiana with 42 (unchanged) and North Dakota with 26 (unchanged).
