Texas led all major producing states by adding 4 drilling rigs in the past week, according to the latest report from Baker Hughes. As of Sept. 26, there were 246 active rigs in Texas – up 4 from 242 the previous week but down 31 or 11.2 percent from 277 a year earlier. Three of the four added in Texas were in Eagle Ford.
Also, Baker Hughes said there are 253 rigs in Permian Basin (down 1 in past week, down 53 or 17.3 percent from 306 a year earlier), 95 rigs in New Mexico (up 2 in past week, down 9 or 8.7 percent from 104 a year earlier) and 549 in U.S. (up 7 in past week, down 38 or 6.5 percent from 587 a year earlier). U.S. added rigs for the fourth consecutive week, and its count is the highest since June (6 of 7 new rigs are oil-directed).
Permian’s count was down or flat for the 30th straight week since February.
Eagle Ford in south Texas added 3 rigs in the past week to reach 45 to continue as No. 2 among regions. Other leaders include Haynesville with 39 (39 week ago, 33 year ago), Williston with 29 (29 week ago, 34 year ago) and Marcellus with 24 (24 week ago, 24 year ago). Among states, Oklahoma is third with 42 rigs (42 week ago, 41 year ago) followed by Louisiana with 37 (36 week ago, 41 year ago) and North Dakota with 27 (27 week ago, 33 year ago).
