For the second straight week, Texas led major producing states in adding active oil and gas drilling rigs. Baker Hughes said in its weekly report of May 1 that Texas has 238 rigs after adding 4 in the previous week. The state’s count is up 6 from 232 to start the year, but down 33 or 12.18 percent from 271 a year ago.
Also as of May 1, there were 241 rigs in Permian Basin (down 1 in past week, down 46 or 16.03 percent from 287 a year ago), 95 in New Mexico (down 3 in past week, down 5 in past year) and 547 in U.S. (up 3 in past week, down 37 or 6.34 percent from 584 a year ago). New Mexico’s count is its lowest since September 2025 (and down from 2026 high of 103). Permian’s count is down from 247 to start 2026.
Haynesville continues to add rigs to rank second among regions with 58 (up 2 in the past week, up 25 in the previous year) followed by Eagle Ford with 43 (up 1 in past week, down 3 in past year), Williston with 28 (unchanged in past week, down 5 in past year) and Marcellus with 25 (unchanged in past week and year). Louisiana is third among states with 44 rigs (up 2 in past week, up 11 in past year) followed by Oklahoma with 43 (unchanged in past week, down 12 in past year) and North Dakota with 26 (unchanged in past week, down 6 in past year).
