Counts of active drilling rigs in U.S., Texas and Permian Basin fell last week, according to Houston-based Baker Hughes. Texas declined by 3 to 289 active rigs – its lowest count since February 2022. Also, there were 603 rigs in U.S. (down 2 in past week, down 128 in past year) and 314 in Permian Basin (down 2 in past week, down 39 in past year). New Mexico reported 109 rigs (up 1 in past week, up 1 in past year). It was the second straight week of decline in Texas and third straight in U.S. and Permian Basin.
Eddy County (56 rigs) and Lea County (up 1 to 50) in New Mexico continue to lead Permian Basin. Other top counties include Martin (down 3 in past week to 35 rigs), Reeves (down 1 to 24) and Loving (unchanged at 22). Also, there are 21 rigs in Midland (down 1), 17 in Reagan (up 1), 14 in Upton (down 1), 11 in Culberson (unchanged) and 10 in Ward (unchanged).
Oklahoma is No. 3 among states with 43 rigs (down 2 in past week, down 8 in past year) followed by Louisiana with 39 (up 1 in past week, down 18 in past year) and North Dakota with 32 (unchanged in past week, down 5 in past year). Eagle Ford in south Texas remains No. 2 among regions with 52 rigs (unchanged in past week, down 10 in past year) followed by Haynesville with 34 (unchanged in past week, down 23 in past year), Williston with 34 (unchanged in past week, down 4 in past year) and Marcellus with 29 (unchanged in past week, down 10 in past year).
