Texas retreated last week from its 2026 high count of 236 active drilling rigs, but the U.S. count was up for the second consecutive week. Baker Hughes said as of March 13 there were 234 rigs in Texas (down 2 from the previous week, down 47 or 16.73 percent from 281 a year ago) and 553 in U.S. (up 2 in past week, down 39 or 6.59 percent from 592 a year ago). The U.S. count is a high for 2026.
Also as of March 13, there were 241 rigs in Permian Basin (unchanged in past week, down 60 or 19.93 percent from 301 a year ago) and 101 rigs in New Mexico (up 1 in previous week, down 1 in previous year).
Oklahoma is No. 3 among states with 44 rigs (down 1 in previous week) followed by Louisiana with 40 (up 4) and North Dakota with 24 (down 1). Haynesville is runner-up among regions with 54 rigs (up 1) followed by Eagle Ford in south Texas with 43 (unchanged), Marcellus with 27 (unchanged) and Williston with 26 (down 1).
