Baker Hughes’ count of active oil and gas rigs returned above 500, according to the April 12 report, after three weeks below 500. Three rigs were added in Texas in the past week for a new total of 502. Permian Basin also added 2 rigs to reach 464, but New Mexico declined 2 to 105, and U.S. declined 3 to 1,022. Of the U.S. total, 833 are oil-directed (up 2 in past week). New Mexico is now No. 2 among states despite its decline after Oklahoma lost 3 to fall to 104 active rigs. To start 2019, there were 486 rigs in Permian Basin, 532 rigs in Texas, 106 rigs in New Mexico and 1,083 rigs in U.S. Also this month marks one year for the U.S. above 1,000 active rigs.
Reeves County lost 6 rigs in the past week, but still leads Permian Basin with 63. Other leaders include Eddy, N.M., with 53 rigs (up 3 in past week), Lea, N.M., with 49 (down 5), Midland with 43 (up 1), Martin with 41 (down 1), Howard with 29 (up 4), Loving with 29 (up 5), Ward with 21 (down 2) and Pecos with 20 (up 1).
Rig counts in other top five states as of April 12 include Louisiana in fourth with 65 (unchanged in past week) and North Dakota with 61 (also unchanged). Rig counts in other leading regions declined, including Eagle Ford with 77 (down 1 in past week), Marcellus with 62 (down 6), Haynesville with 56 (down 2) and Cana Woodford with 48 (down 2).
