Texas Workforce Commission said employment in the state’s upstream oil and gas employment increased by 1,800 jobs in March compared with the previous month. Total upstream employment was 193,300 jobs in March, which is down by 7,100 jobs or 3.5 percent from March 2025.
Todd Staples, president of Texas Oil & Gas Association, said May 11, “While it is premature to assume the increased employment will continue, announcements have been made that some companies are expanding production.”
The upstream sector involves oil and natural gas extraction and excludes other industry sectors such as refining, petrochemicals, fuels wholesaling, oilfield equipment manufacturing, pipelines and gas utilities, which support hundreds of thousands of additional jobs across Texas.
