Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners Association said last week employment in the state’s upstream sector declined by 1,200 jobs in July for the second straight month. There was a decline of 300 jobs in oil and gas extraction to 62,800 and a decline of 900 service jobs to 133,000. TIPRO said employment ended July higher than it started the year, “but the two most recent months point to a weakening trend.”
Employment grew from 192,400 jobs in January and 191,500 in February to a peak of 197,300 in May, then declined to 195,800 in July.
TIPRO also said Aug. 21 that as production grows, new data from Texas comptroller’s office show increased amounts of production taxes paid by operators. In July producers paid $567 million in oil production taxes (31 percent above July 2025) and $241 million in gas production taxes (36 percent above July 2025).
