Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners Association said in its recent State of Energy report that the state led the nation in industry employment last year. Texas accounted for 23 percent of all oil and gas jobs in the nation. The industry supported 476,777 direct jobs in Texas in 2025 with total direct and indirect employment at 2.5 million.
And Texas had the highest rig count in the nation for 2025 with an average of 272 active rigs, including 277 in January and 253 in December. TIPRO said March 6 that New Mexico was runner-up in rig count with 98.
