U.S. added 1 drilling rig last week, but the counts of active rigs were down in Texas and Permian Basin. U.S. now has 620 rigs as of Jan. 19 (771 year ago), but Texas fell 3 to 305 (380 year ago), and Permian Basin dropped 2 to 307 (354 year ago). New Mexico added 1 for a new total of 98 (102 year ago). Texas and Oklahoma (-1) were the only major producing states to decline in rig count last week.
Eagle Ford in south Texas remains No. 2 among regions with 55 rigs (unchanged from last week, down 17 from 72 year ago) followed by Haynesville with 42 (down 1 in past week, down 27 in past year), Williston with 34 (unchanged in past week, down 8 in past year) and Marcellus with 29 (up 2 in past week, down 8 in past year). Louisiana is No. 3 among states with 43 (up 1 in past week, down 21 in past year) followed closely by Oklahoma with 42 (down 22 in past year) and North Dakota with 33 (unchanged in past week, down 6 in past year).
