U.S. added drilling rigs for the third straight week and fourth time in six weeks in 2026, according to Baker Hughes’ weekly report of Feb. 6. U.S. added 5 rigs in the past week for a new total of 551. The count is up 6 for the year, but down 35 or 5.97 percent from 586 a year ago.
Texas also reported an increase of 6 rigs in the past week to 232, but its count is down 46 or 16.55 percent from 278 a year ago. Also, as of Feb. 6 there were 101 rigs in New Mexico (down 1 in the past week, down 5 in the past year) and 241 rigs in Permian Basin (down 1 in past week, down 62 or 20.46 percent from 303 a year ago).
The U.S. count included 130 gas-directed rigs (up 5 in past week) and 412 oil-directed rigs (up 1 in past week).
Haynesville in east Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana reported 7 additional rigs this week to rank No. 2 among regions with 50 rigs followed by Eagle Ford with 40, Williston with 29 and Marcellus with 25 – all 3 unchanged in past week. Among states, Oklahoma is third with 46 rigs (unchanged) followed by Louisiana with 39 (up 1) and North Dakota with 27 (unchanged).
