According to U.S. Energy Information Administration, the share of the nation’s crude oil and petroleum imports from OPEC countries has declined 77 percent since 2006. In its Monthly Energy Review last week, EIA said imports from Saudi Arabia, Arabia, Algeria, Iraq and other OPEC countries has been declining since 2006 while imports from Canada have nearly doubled. EIA said total crude oil and petroleum imports from Canada to U.S. exceeded those from OPEC for the first time in 2014 and have every year since.
U.S. imports of crude oil from Canada reached record highs in 2024 (55 percent of U.S. imports compared to 15 percent from OPEC and 30 percent from the rest of the world). EIA said July 7 nearly all crude oil used by U.S. refineries in Midwest and Mountain regions comes from Canada.
