Oil and gas drillers emerged from the holidays by adding rigs in most basins and producing states during the second week of January. The 13-rig gain in U.S. pushed it above 600 for the first time since April 2020.
Haynesville remained No. 2 among basins with 52 rigs, but Eagle Ford added 6 rigs in the past week to reach 50 followed by Marcellus with 31, Williston with 27 and Cana Woodford with 26. Louisiana remained No. 3 among states with 55 rigs followed by Oklahoma with 49, North Dakota with 27 and Pennsylvania with 20.
New Mexico counties of Lea (54) and Eddy (37) again lead the rig count in Permian Basin followed by the west Texas counties of Midland (30), Martin (23), Reeves (22) and Howard (21). Five others have at least 10 rigs.
