January 21, 2025 by PBOG

Count of active drilling rigs in U.S. continued its decline, but the count in Permian Basin remained at 304 for the seventh straight week.  The last gain in the U.S. count was Dec. 6, 2024 (the only weekly gain since Oct. 11, 2024).  Baker Hughes said as of Jan. 17 there were 580 rigs in U.S. (down 4 in past week, down 40 in past year), 281 in Texas (down 1 in past week, down 24 in past year) and 103 in New Mexico (unchanged in past week, up 5 in past year).  There were 307 rigs in Permian Basin a year ago.

Oklahoma is No. 3 among states with 43 rigs (unchanged in past week, up 1 in past year) followed by North Dakota with 32 (down 4 in past week, down 1 in past year) and 29 in Louisiana (down 1 in past week, down 14 in past year).  Eagle Ford in south Texas is No. 2 among regions with 44 rigs (up 1 in past week, down 11 in past year) followed by Williston with 33 (down 4 in past week, down 1 in past year), Haynesville with 29 (down 2 in past week, down 13 in past year) and Marcellus with 23 (unchanged in past week, down 6 in past year).

Rig count leaders in Permian Basin remain in place.  Eddy (53 rigs) and Lea (47) in New Mexico rank at the top followed in the top five by Midland (down 1 to 29), Reeves (28) and Martin (27).
