U.S. rig count falls for sixth quarter in a row to 581 at end of 2Q

Baker Hughes’ count of active drilling rigs in U.S. fell again as of June 28 for the fourth straight week. And the count fell in June for the fourth straight month, and the count fell for the sixth quarter in a row for the first time since 2020. The U.S. count was 581 – down 7 for the week and 93 for the past year (14 percent). It’s the lowest U.S. rig count since December 2021.
The counts in Permian Basin and Texas declined for the third straight week. The last time Permian reported a gain in rig count was April. As of June 28 there were 305 rigs in Permian (down 3 from last week and 36 from 341 a year ago), 277 in Texas (down 5 in the past week and down 64 from 341 a year ago) and 107 in New Mexico (down 1 in past week and 1 from 108 a year ago).
Eagle Ford in south Texas is No. 2 among regions with 47 rigs (down 3 in past week and 14 in past year) followed by Haynesville with 36, Williston with 35 and Marcellus with 25 – all unchanged last week. Louisiana is No. 3 among states with 40 (unchanged) followed by Oklahoma with 34 (down 1) and North Dakota with 34 (unchanged).
Eddy County, N.M., reported 1 fewer rig but remains the Permian leader with 52 followed closely by Lea, N.M., with 51 (unchanged). Martin was unchanged with 30, Reeves added 1 to 24 and Loving was unchanged with 22. Other leaders include Midland with 18, Upton with 16 (up 1), Reagan with 15 (down 2), Howard with 13 (up 1) and Glasscock with 10 (up 1).
