U.S. Energy Information Administration said three regions in the U.S. are among the top 8 natural gas-producing areas in the world when ranked independently against other gas-producing countries. U.S. produced 104 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas in 2023 (75 percent more than runner-up Russia), the most recent year for which EIA has comprehensive worldwide data.
Only Russia produced more natural gas in 2023 than Appalachia’s 33 billion cfd with its Marcellus and Utica plays. After Iran and China, Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico was fifth with 21 billion cfd followed by Canada, Qatar and Haynesville in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas eighth with 15 billion cfd.
U.S. has been the world leader in natural gas production since 2009. More recently, U.S. natural gas production increased to 106 billion cfd in first half of 2025.
