Houston-based Occidental Petroleum and its subsidiary 1PointFive said this week they expect Phase I of the STRATOS direct air capture plant in Ector County in Permian Basin will come online in second quarter. 1PointFive said Phase 1 “is in the final stage of startup.” Phase 2, which incorporates learnings from research and development and Phase 1 construction activities, “also will begin commissioning in second quarter with operational ramp-up continuing through the rest of the year.”
STRATOS is designed to capture up to 500,000 tonnes per year of CO2.
As part of the permitting and approval process of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, it was reported that STRATOS is expected to include three wells to store about 722,000 tpy of CO2 in saline formations at a depth of about 4,400 ft.
The company said remaining activities before start-up include ramping up remaining pellet reactors, completing calciner final commissioning in parallel, and beginning CO2 injection.

It’s been a long time coming. Very exciting! Yet another Vicki milestone.
