For the first time since March 2020, Baker Hughes reported a count of active oil and gas drilling rigs of at least 700 in U.S. As of May 6, there were 335 rigs in Permian Basin (unchanged in past week, up 106 in past year), 344 in Texas (down 1 in past week, up 127 in past year), 98 in New Mexico (up 1 in past week, up 28 in past year) and 705 in U.S. (up 7 in past week, up 257 in past year).
Louisiana remains No. 3 among states in rigs with 62 (up 4 in past week) followed by Oklahoma with 53 (up 2 in past week) and North Dakota with 35 (unchanged). Haynesville remains No. 2 among regions with 68 rigs (up 1 in past week) followed by Eagle Ford with 61 (unchanged), Marcellus with 39 (up 2) and Williston with 37 (unchanged).
Lea County, N.M., dropped a rig in the past week, but remains the Permian leader with 49 followed by Eddy, N.M., with 44, Midland with 40, Martin with 34, Reeves with 31, Loving with 28, Howard with 21 and Upton with 17.
