Energy Workforce and Technology Council reported last week the third consecutive month of employment growth in the energy industry. The council said there were 633,115 energy services jobs in May, according to preliminary data from Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s up from 627,941 in April and 627,018 in March after low counts of 625,057 in January and 624,149 in March.
Molly Determan, council president, said June 8, “We continue to see a slow and steady increase in activity across portions of the energy services sector. Companies are receiving more requests for work and responding with measured workforce growth, but they remain disciplined in their hiring decisions and long-term planning.”
She added, “While activity is improving, this is not a rapid expansion cycle. Service companies are focused on sustainable growth, maintaining a skilled workforce and positioning themselves to meet future demand as market conditions continue to evolve.”
Texas, home of the prolific Permian Basin, leads with 308,517 jobs in the May report followed by Louisiana with 52,865, Oklahoma with 48,180, Colorado with 25,449 and New Mexico with 23,678. Texas’ job total is up from 305,995 in April, 305,546 in March, 304,148 in February and 304,687 in January.
