Lee Zeldin, administrator of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, previewed proposed changes in federal methane requirements for oil and gas producers last week at the annual meeting in Santa Fe of the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association. Zeldin said the administration of Donald J. Trump plans to ease requirements, including elimination of a program targeting large methane releases and new rules governing low-producing wells and flaring of associated natural gas. Zeldin said the agency is responding to producers’ concerns that the Biden era regulations of 2024 were costly and unworkable.
The EPA has not released text of the proposed changes, detailed emissions estimates or cost analysis. Once formally published, the proposals would be subject to public comment before the agency finalized changes.
