The count of active oil and gas drilling rigs in U.S. declined for the second straight week while Permian Basin reported 242 rigs for the third week in a row. Baker Hughes said as of April 17 there were 543 rigs in U.S. (down 2 in past week, down 42 or 7.18 percent from 585 a year ago). Permian’s count is down 47 or 16.26 percent from 289 a year ago.
Also as of April 17, there were 232 rigs in Texas (unchanged from last week, down 42 or 15.33 percent from 274 a year ago) and 100 rigs in New Mexico (down 1 in past week, unchanged from a year ago).
No major producing state and no region reported additional rigs last week.
Haynesville is runner-up among regions with 55 rigs (down 1 in past week) followed by Eagle Ford in south Texas with 42 (down 1), Williston with 28 (unchanged) and Marcellus with 25 (unchanged). Among states, Louisiana and Oklahoma report 42 active rigs each followed by North Dakota at No. 5 with 26.
