The seven-state south central region – including Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana – led the gains in underground working natural gas storage capacity in lower 48 states in 2025. U.S. Energy Information Administration said last week underground natural gas storage provides a source of energy when demand increases to balance U.S. energy needs. EIA calculates storage capacity in two ways – demonstrated peak capacity and design capacity – and both increased in 2025.
Demonstrated peak capacity rose 0.1 percent or 6 billion cubic feet in 2025 to increase for the third straight year. And it increased by 16 Bcf in the south central region, which also includes Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi and Kansas.
Design capacity in November 2025 rose by 26 Bcf to 4683 Bcf compared to November 2024. In the south central region, it increased by 21 Bcf.
