Midland’s Summit Petroleum recently reported success in Permian Basin with updated lateral drilling. Summit drilled and completed U-turn lateral wells in Upton County, achieving strong production results in southern Midland Basin. An initial group of five U-turn wells achieved an average initial production rate of 1,584 barrels per day. Summit placed stacked U-turn laterals around acreage where EOG Resources reportedly plans drilling operations – but has not yet completed.
Summit’s 10-well development plan includes seven U-turn or horseshoe laterals and three straight laterals. Dennis Johnson, chairman and CEO, told Midland Reporter Telegram the seven include one each in Jo Mill, upper Wolfcamp B and lower Wolfcamp B and two each in middle Spraberry and lower Spraberry (measured depth 21,000 feet each). Johnson said the company estimated 23 days but it averaged 20 days from drill to rig release. Reporter Telegram said Summit made the decision for U-turn wells because it has only one section of land.
