Permian operators in Texas and New Mexico contributed to increases in counts of active drilling rigs in U.S. Baker Hughes said in its weekly report of May 15 there were 551 rigs in U.S. – up 3 in the past week but down 25 or 4.34 percent from 576 a year ago.
Texas led major producing states by adding 5 rigs in the past week to reach 245 (down 26 or 9.59 percent from 271 a year ago). New Mexico’s count was up 1 in the past week to 96 (up 2 in past year). It was the fourth straight week of additional rigs in Texas and U.S. Last week U.S. added 5 oil-directed rigs to 415 while gas-directed rigs fell by 1 to 128.
Haynesville dropped 2 rigs in the past week (to 56) but still leads all other regions except Permian. Others include Eagle Ford with 42 (down 1 in past week), Williston with 28 (unchanged) and Marcellus with 24 (down 1). Among states, Oklahoma has 45 after adding 1 rig last week followed by Louisiana with 39 (down 3) and North Dakota with 26 (unchanged).
